Die Westernserie Bonanza ist nach ihrer Titelmelodie benannt. Bonanza ist ein englisches Wort für „Goldgrube“. Die Familie Cartwright, um die sich die Serie dreht, besteht aus vier Männern, einem Vater und seinen drei Söhnen. Die Ranch, auf der die Familie lebt, heisst Ponderosa, benannt nach den dort wachsenden Ponderosa-Pines (dt.: Gelb-Kiefer). Die nächsten Orte, Virginia City und Reno, liegen im US-Bundesstaat Nevada. Die Ponderosa Ranch liegt direkt am Lake Tahoe in Nevada. In der Realität kann man die Ponderosa Ranch im Ort Incline Village in Nevada besichtigen. Hier handelt es sich allerdings um einen Nachbau für Touristen, denn die Serie wurde zum grossen Teil im Studio gedreht. Die Innenaufnahmen sind ausnahmslos im Studio entstanden.
