Der zeitreisende Ausserirdische Doctor Who reist durch Raum und Zeit in seinem TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) Raumschiff, das von außen einer Telefonzelle ähnelt, aber von innen ein hypermodernes Zeitraumschiff ist. Immer wieder erlebt er mit seinen irdischen Gefährten Abenteuer und muss (natürlich gewaltfrei) gegen die bösen Daleks, Cybermen oder andere Zeitreisende wie den Master kämpfen. Doch wenn er mal verliert und stirbt, kann er sich regenerieren, wobei die neue Regeneration einen völlig unterschiedlichen Charakter aufweisen kann, im Vergleich zu der letzten. Leider kann es so nicht ewig weitergehen, da der gute Doc mit dem Fragezeichen auf seiner Visitenkarte, nur eine bestimmte Anzahl von Regenerationen zur Verfügung hat.
